Tooley's dictionary of mapmakers---(Dudley, Sir Robert [self- styled Duke of Northumberland, Earl of Warwick] (1573-1649). Born in Richmond, the illegitimate son of the Earl of Leicester, Engineer, explorer and geographer, active in Tataly, died in Florence. Compliled chart atlas Dell'Arcano del mare, 1646-1647 (printed by Francesco Onofri; some proof plates of the first edition were amended in manuscript by L. Holstein); revised edition, Jacopo Bagnoni and Lucini 1661. Both edition include charts engraved by Antonio Francesco Lucini. First nautical atlas by an Englishman, and the firts nautical atlas with charts on Mercator projection)
